I got the idea for this shoot about 5 years ago and it’s been on my list of things I’ve wanted to shoot ever since. I’ve been so lucky to have been so busy with work that I never had time to actually bring it to life, along with the many other ideas on that list. I was cleaning out my office recently and found old sketches of the shoot and was reminded of the idea again and felt like it was finally time to get it off the list and make it a reality. I worked for 2 weeks making the props for this shoot. While I have done many, many shoots with large paper props before I have never done any in origami or 3D style and boy was that a whole different undertaking. I was so relieved when the shoot was done and I could toss those props. Who knew a gigantic paper plane could be so difficult to make?
One of the things I struggled with each time I’d try to concept the full shoot was whether or not to do all-white or color. I saw someone speak who said to not overthink the details and go with your gut. And while my heart is with color always I just knew I really wanted this shoot to be monochromatic.
